Teak and cedar furniture don't need to be covered during the winter months, but furniture that is made from other types of wood do require protection during the winter. Ideally, patio furniture should be stored in the garage, but if that is not possible then it should be covered with plastic or another protective material that is securely fastened to it, and then stored in a sheltered area away from direct winter weather.

Wrought iron patio furniture is especially sturdy, due to its metal construction. It is generally painted black, but it can also be found in other colors such as; brown, cocoa, beige, and even white. This type of furniture uses cushions and pads to help add bright colors and make the pieces more comfortable for relaxing and lounging.

Caring for wrought iron patio furniture is very simple. Wash the pieces with a soap intended for automotive use, taking care to rinse well after washing. About twice a year, you should apply an automotive wax to the wrought iron to help protect, and preserve it. Washing, and waxing can be combined into a single step if you select an all-in-one product that contains both cleansing and waxing agents.

Before you begin waxing, you should inspect your wrought iron furniture for nicks, scratches, and abrasions to the finish. Use a can of matching spray paint to touch up these spots, then proceed with the protective wax application.
